Welcome to Enthusiast Month (if you missed the intro… here’s a quick recap).
In addition lots of exciting additions to FLIP, events for you to be involved in and contests… we are also introducing a new summer-related theme each week.
Week 1: Get Active!
Tuesday: Run
Benefits of Running: Everyone knows that running is a great way to get into shape, but did you know that it can benefit almost every part of your body, as well as lift your mood? Running is incredibly effective at making you healthier in a number of ways. While it may not be everybody’s favorite form of exercise, knowing what it can do for your life just may make you look at running in an entirely new light. (Read More – Active.Com)
Running Nutrition: Want to know the best foods for runners and why? Visit FitnessMagazine.com for the details. (lean beef, berries, bananas, wild salmon to name a few…)
Summer Tip: Endure the warm weather. You’ll feel better after two weeks of training in the heat. You’ll experience less discomfort and adapt.
Or, hit the trails to give your run some shade! (know of any good trail runs coming up?)
Upcoming Runs:
Columbus 10K – This Sunday, June 9th. To kickoff Enthusiast Month and to show our appreciation to our supporters… for anyone that signs up for the Columbus 10K and our Trail Run, we will cover $5 of each run and give your free shirt. Contact us for details.
FLIP’s Darby Creek Trail Run – why haven’t you signed up yet?
Ultimate Mud Warrior Color Palooza (not an actual run… although, someone’s probably starting one soon)
Wednesday: Walk
“There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderate walking, reduces the risk of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” – said Dr. David Sabgir, CEO/Founder of Walk with a Doc.
Benefits of Walking: Just because you could never imagine achieving a 6 minute mile doesn’t mean you can’t be active! Consistent walking is actually one of the greatest things you can do for your health. Regular walkers are known to have reduced stress, more energy, and the ability to focus better throughout the day. Not only does walking benefit your day-to-day stamina, but this joint-friendly exercise can reduce your risk for heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. As the workout with the lowest dropout rate, adding a daily walk to your schedule could be the easiest thing you ever did to move towards a healthier life. (read more at sharecare.com)
Walking in Columbus: Want to start walking? Columbus is an incredibly walk-friendly city. To get started walking and find a great path or trail near you, visit getactivecolumbus.com and Columbus Public Health.

Thursday: Bike
Benefits of Biking: Interested in sculpting your lower body? Look no further. Hopping on your bike throughout the week is a great, low-impact workout that is awesome for your heart, your muscles, and your waistline. Studies have shown that just three hours of biking per week reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50 percent! What else is great about bicycling? It is less expensive than driving a car. Peopleforbikes.com argues that for those of us with a round-trip commute of 10 miles or less, biking could be saving you $10 a day! That’s $3,650 in a year! So if you’re interested in trimming your waistline and fattening your wallet, grab that bike out of the garage and get started. (Check out more at new.discovery.com).
Biking Nutrition: Fuel your next ride and make your own energy bar. Check out this great energy packed, natural dried fruit breakfast bar recipe from Leslie.
Get Started: If you’re interested in a group workout, there are biking opportunities almost every day in Columbus that are open to bikers at all levels (considerbiking.org)! On the other hand, if you want to get started on your own, Columbus is covered in different bike paths worth exploring (getactivecolumbus.com).

Friday: Swim
Benefits of Swimming: Who knew that the focus of your summer fun could also be a great workout! Swimming is an excellent, low resistance, full body exercise that anyone can get into at any fitness level. Why is it so great? Unlike impact exercises like running and jumping, water makes you buoyant and supports your weight, bones, and muscles. Water also provides resistance that makes swimming great for a strength training workout. The many benefits of swimming make it one of the most effective workouts for overall health maintenance. The added bonus of swimming during the summer months is that it keeps you out of the heat and seriously, when it’s really hot outside, what sounds better than jumping in the water? Just make a workout out of it! (Check out more swimming information at livestrong.com).
Nutrition for Swimmers: Whether you’re splashing around with kids and friends or swimming laps, any kind of swimming burns calories. Check out professional tips to fuel your new aquatic lifestyle here!
Opportunities for Swimming: There are tons of pools throughout Columbus with little to no membership cost. If you’re interested in swimming to get fit, check this out: http://www.csmst.org/
For more swimming opportunities, check out the FLIP feature on water and swimming that we did last year! FLIP into summer with this great and refreshing exercise.
